National Capital Commission
Canada

The National Capital Commission’s program and policy related to commemorations was revised in 2006. This document, entitled Comprehensive Commemoration Program and Policy for Canada’s Capital, outlines the process required for establishing new commemorations on federal lands in the Capital.

Although the NCC is responsible for the approval of commemorative projects on all federal lands in Canada’s Capital Region, it does not initiate commemorations. However, it does provide assistance and advice at all stages of the project, including:

  • consultation and confirmation of the subject’s national symbolic importance (consult Evaluation Criteria in the Related Links below)
  • identification of available sites
  • development of design criteria
  • selection of an appropriate design
  • site construction
  • unveiling
  • ongoing interpretation.

All costs associated with the project management, development, construction and installation, as well as ongoing maintenance costs of a commemoration are the responsibility of the sponsoring organization. Depending on the scope, a commemoration project generally requires two to five years for development.

Under the NCC’s commemorations policy, all commemorations must be of national symbolic importance, must meet certain conditions and must also be compatible with NCC-approved plans for the Capital region. To obtain a copy of the policy contact us or download the pdf file below.
